'The Fellowship is for life': Our 2015 and 2016 Fellows celebrate the completion of the programme

Forty-two Clore Social Fellows celebrated the completion of the Fellowship programme at an event last night at the Resolution Foundation, becoming part of our ever-growing network of social leaders. The 2015 and 2016 Fellows were joined by invited guests from the sector including our trustees, specialist funders and past Fellows.

Diarmuid ÓNéill, a 2014 Fellow, spoke to the guests about what the Fellowship meant to him saying that the network of people he met during the Fellowship are the ‘secret sauce’ to the programme.  Leadership, he suggested, is about trying and failing time and again.  ‘As leaders we owe it to ourselves to nurture places where we can learn and make mistakes. This is what the Fellowship provided me and this will stand to me for the rest of my career’.

Each of the Fellows were awarded certificates by our CEO, Shaks Ghosh who reminded them of the three Fellowship mantras: 1. The Fellowship is for life - so always stay in touch with your network; 2. Leaders grow leaders - share your learnings with those you work with; and 3. Leadership development is a lifelong journey.

Picking up some of Shaks’ and Diarmuid’s themes, Vyla Rollins, Executive Director of the London Business School’s Leadership Institute addressed the Fellows by asking them to consider ‘what now?’ in their ongoing leadership development. She shared some of her leadership lessons, and urged the Fellows to take them back to their organisations:

  • Conversations: Change in people and organisations starts with a conversation, so take time to speak to the people around you
  • Think about what you can bring to the party: How can you help and support your staff and beneficiaries
  • The butterfly effect:  Don’t underestimate how small changes are often even more impactful than big ones.
  • Hold steady: Develop the ability to create the space you need where change work can happen
  • Remember your fellow Fellows: Stay connected to them, the wider Clore Social network and social sector to always expand your network of peers
