An interactive session to discuss the positive, collaborative processes taking place in light of COVID-19 to be more inclusive and effective across the statutory and community sectors.

Aim of event

To share our insights following completion of a project which looked at how we can rebalance the power when community and statutory sectors work together. The purpose of the project was to examine and grow positive behaviours that have been successful during the COVID-19 response to become incorporated as normal good practice, creating an open, equal process for shared working and common desire to see positive social progress.

The challenge

This came from the reported incidences of small community organisations reporting challenging issues with local authorities and large commissioners and the behaviours that caused them difficulties and stunted their ability to grow and deliver.

These issues were clearly behaviours rather than policy and it was felt that if there was an understanding of the value then it could be negotiated for an agreed practice. The swift responses of local groups in Covid-19 crises mean this is a crucial time to make this happen.

Idea of/vision for the event

To open up the conversation and look at practices that can be adopted to grow from common ground. The intended impact is that it is possible to continue this good work. We will look at the Shifting The Balance report that was released this year after a series of workshops that was commissioned by Power to Change and carried out by New Local. It cites successful models across the country and good practices to adopt.

As well as going through the reports and project, we will talk about our organisations' COVID-19 response, as well as look at the different skills will need to step forward as we work back to ‘normal’ and have a breakout room where people present their ideas and how a new behaviours framework can be adopted.

Audience

We hope to engage everybody, from community organisations, small communities/charitable organisations to statutory services (Local Authorities and Health), large charities and commissioning bodies. This event is open to anyone, with a particular focus on decision makers in Local Authorities and leaders within community organisations.

Participation

During the event we will look at the emerging skills needed to take a step forward into the new ‘normal’. There will also be a breakout session where you will have the opportunity to present ideas and gain inspiration around how a new behaviours framework can be adopted. We’d welcome your input to discussions during the event as we collectively share examples of good practices that can be adopted.

Call to action

To ask people from across the sectors to look at the Shifting the Balance report and a commitment to adopting an agreed framework, ensuring the balance of power at discussions recognises the unique qualities that each brings to work toward shared purpose, and is transparent and honest and continues the conversation.

We will end on feedback and evaluation which can continue in the online Special Interest Group, Community and Statutory Working Together (please sign into SharedPurpose to access). Also cross country sectors/conversations to continue and be open to and appreciate ‘critical friend’ conversations.
