Fear-setting

Outcomes

Gain self awareness!

Tim Ferriss turns a goal-setting exercise upside down by encouraging us to fully envision and write down our fears. He calls this simple but powerful exercise "fear-setting." It can help you thrive in high-stress environments, overcome self-paralysis, and take action.

Get Started

Step 1

Watch "Why you should define your fears instead of your goals" by Tim Ferriss. (13 minutes)

Step 2

Download the fear setting template below, and identify the thing you’re afraid of doing. Which action have you been avoiding? Write this at the top.

Step 3

Fill out the Fear-setting template.

Define - List the worst things that could happen if you do that thing

Prevent - List how you can stop those bad things from happening

Repair - If the worst things happen, list how to repair each bad thing

Benefits - List all possible benefits from taking this action

Six months - List the costs of inaction during this time

One year - List the costs of inaction during this time

Three years - List the costs of inaction during this time

Step 4

Reflect on the lists in front of you. What are the consequences of not doing the thing you are afraid of doing? What conclusions can you draw? What actions can you take?

Step 5

Set a one month goal, write it here, and it will be emailed back to you.

Step 6

Check in with yourself in one month. Have you taken the actions you promised yourself to take? Have you overcome your fears? If not, don't worry! Sometimes this can take time. Set yourself another check-in for a month's time, and remember to refer to your Fear-setting lists.
