A vital programme designed to build core management skills for effective leadership in the social sector.

Programme information

During this online programme you will be introduced to an array of impactful and practical management tools and concepts. Learning will be delivered through a series of modules focusing on key management topics and will be further supported by two facilitated online workshops. These workshops aim to provide space to deepen your understanding and engage with your peers. The programme also includes a welcome and closing session to further strengthen connections among participants. In additional to management skills, the programme will engage participants in the foundational elements of leadership.

To support continued development this programme is certified by The Institute of Leadership and on completion of the programme participants will have access to the award-winning MyLeadership e-learning programme.

We are delighted to offer a bursary place on this programme for an individual who identifies as Black or racially minoritised. The bursary seeks to address the disparities and imbalances in social sector leadership. Thus, this bursary is for an individual from a Black or racially minoritised backgrounds from small-medium sized organisations (annual income of less than £1m). Eligibility criteria

Professional experience

This programme is for newly appointed managers, or current managers looking for a refresher. This experience could be paid or voluntary. Though not exhaustive, this programme generally caters to individuals in the following roles: Officers, Coordinators, Managers, Advisors, Team Leaders, Caseworkers.

Training and development

Participants may have had no or limited formal management training.

Working for a social purpose

This refers to organisations or freelance work with a social purpose, including charities, social enterprises, CICs, etc.

Passionate about social change

Your interest in using your management skills and knowledge to help make the world a better place is key. Your determination to develop yourself so you can influence social change effectively is a highly important criteria for your application.

Programme schedule

Please find below an overview of the live classroom schedule to help you plan ahead. Each week participants will receive an email highlighting the key resources and tasks to prioritise in preparation for the upcoming workshops.

The programme will begin on September 29, when you will receive a welcome email granting access to the introductory materials, so you can begin familiarising yourself with the content ahead of the first live session.

 

Welcome session | Wednesday 1 October | 12:00-14:00
We kickstart the journey by introducing the programme and facilitator, establishing connections within the cohort and launching the online community. This session marks the beginning of the programme, where participants work collaboratively to enhance their management and leadership skills.

Workshop 1 | Wednesday 15 October | 12:00-14:00
Participants will be asked to reflect on their own assessment of their management and leadership skills. During the workshop, breakout sessions will encourage deeper discussion, focusing on challenges faced as managers and reflections on management styles and qualities. The workshop will close with enough time for questions and a preview of what's ahead.

Workshop 2 | Wednesday 5 November | 12:00-14:00
Participants will be asked to think about effective communication methods. During the workshop, breakout sessions will encourage group discussion on current communication challenges and the impact of remote working on communication and management. The workshop will conclude with a wrap-up of key points and a preview of what's ahead.

Closing session | Wednesday 19 November | 13:30-14:30
In our concluding session, we will allow time for reflection, making pledges for future growth and outlining next steps for continued development. This will offer a chance to celebrate achievements, set intentions for the future and explore opportunities for further progression on the path toward effective and impactful management and leadership.

Programme elements

The programme will offer access to a wealth of management and leadership development interventions designed to help participants build the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to influence social change effectively.

Online learning and training

Your learning will consist of online modules, supporting resources and four online sessions. During the four sessions - two workshops, one welcome and one closing session - you will have the chance to meet peers and participate in group discussions and reflections.

Reflection journals

We encourage participants keep a reflective journal in order to better consider their development as they go through each module.

Dedicated reading lists

Alongside the core programme content, you will be provided with dedicated resources which include relevant articles, podcasts and videos for you to explore at your own pace.

 Josephine Knowles

Josephine Knowles is a freelance trainer, coach, and facilitator.

Josephine is a Clore Fellow and is passionate about Leadership Development, gaining new insights and empowering people to be the best version of themselves. She loves facilitating learning and is known for her lively classrooms. 

Josephine has worked with women who sell sex in various contexts for the last 25 years and has a Masters in ‘Violence Against Women’ from the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit at London Metropolitan University. She is the Co-Founder of Beyond the Streets, a UK charity working to end sexual exploitation. She is also an Argentine tango addict, a beginner cyclist, and a yogi.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don’t need to have any particular academic or professional qualifications to take part in the programme. We know that management and leadership training can be very difficult to access in the social sector, so try to make it accessible to those with minimal prior training. Your passion for and experience in the social sector are all you need to participate.

Management experience may have been accrued at different points throughout your career, at different organisations, within different sectors, and can be paid or voluntary. Management Fundamentals applicants may be new to their role, about to begin a management role, or are looking for a management refresher.
