Programme information

Leading Beyond Borders 2021 Programme for Experienced Leaders is a fully funded eight-month online leadership development journey designed for those with six plus years’ leadership experience. This experience can be in a paid or voluntary capacity, and does not all have to be UK-based.

Taking place online between October 2021 and June 2022, the programme aims to help build a stronger and connected sector led by a generation of skilled, empowered, and generous social leaders, including leaders with lived experience* of the immigration system, by supporting 60 people to develop their skills and create networks.

This programme is co-designed and co-delivered in partnership with Clore Social Leadership, the Centre for Knowledge Equity and LEx Movement (Lived Experience Leaders Movement hosted by the Centre for Knowledge Equity). If you have less experience than this, please visit Leading Beyond Borders, Emerging Leader.

Working in the UK Migration and Refugee sector

This programme is specifically for those working or volunteering within organisations whose mission, purpose and work is focused on the issues of migration and refugee protection. To be eligible, the primary activities of your work must include working with or providing services to people in the UK who are migrants, refugees and/or people seeking asylum.

Priority applicants

Applications from Lived Experienced Leaders* are strongly encouraged. Where possible priority will be given to Lived Experience Leaders, small and medium-sized charities and groups, and at least 50% of places will also be for those working outside of London.

Keen to develop

Your interest in using your leadership skills and knowledge to help make the world a better place is key. Your determination to develop yourself so you can lead social change effectively is a highly important criteria for your application.

*Lived Experienced explained

Lived Experience Leaders are those who have direct, personal first-hand experience (past or present) of immigration systems and who have activated these experiences to inform, shape and lead their social purpose work to directly benefit the communities they share those experiences with. For example, you arrived into the UK as a migrant or asylum seeker and have personal first-hand experience of the immigration system. If you have worked in the immigration system, we refer to this as practice experience and not lived experience.

Our methods

The programme learning will be guided by Clore Social Leadership’s Social Capabilites Framework and Leadership Development Model. Using our Leadership Development Model (below), you will learn how and what these skills and behaviours look like in action, where your strengths and areas of improvement lie, and how you can develop and encourage them in yourselves and others. Using our Social Capabilities Framework (below), you will be guided to develop inspirational, empowering, courageous, focused, passionate and generous leadership capabilities - qualities essential to any effective leader.

Know Yourself, Be Yourself, Look After Yourself

Leadership development must start with self-awareness. The most successful leaders critically assess their strengths, weaknesses, motivations and values. Leadership is tough, so it is also important to build physical and emotional resilience, and look after their own wellbeing so they can respond effectively to leadership challenges.

Assess Context

Social sector ‘systems’ are rapidly changing. We live in a dynamic world that is transforming our workplaces, politics, ethics and communities. To meet these demands, social leaders need to understand the complexities of changing systems. They must also be aware of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead to steer their teams and organisations, and make the most of what these changes offer.

Work With And Through Others

No leader exists or succeeds in isolation. Social skills and empathy are required to inspire, motivate and empower others, whilst respecting diversity and celebrating the power that difference brings. Working with and through others involves collaborating, forming partnerships, as well as inspiring and growing other leaders, all while making a positive social impact.

The Social Leadership Capabilities Framework outlines the attributes, behaviours and skills required for successful social sector leadership. Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don’t need to have any particular academic or professional qualifications to take part in the programme. We know that leadership development training can be very difficult to access in the social sector, so try to make it accessible to those with minimal prior training. Your passion for and experience in the sector are all you need to apply.

We classify the leadership experience required to meet the programme eligibility as professional, in-sector experience. This may have been accrued at different points throughout your career, at different organisations and can be paid or voluntary. Experienced Leader applicants should be able to display at least six years of such experience. If your experience falls outside of these criteria, but you feel you are otherwise well suited for the programme, let us know why your experience is relevant and transferable in your application.

If you have any questions, please email us at programmes@cloresocialleadership.org.uk. This email address is checked three times a week, so please expect a response time of 48 hours.

As a Clore Social Fellow, you will join a large network of social sector leaders from across the UK. Opportunities to connect with local fellows and continue learning will be supported, encouraged and facilitated wherever possible. We are always developing new programme offerings, and may have something of interest to you in the future, so keep in touch, and let us know if you have any ideas, or want to develop something with us for your organisation.

Lived Experience Leaders (LEx leaders) will also be invited to join the UK-wide Lived Experience Leaders Movement where you will be able to connect with LEx leaders working across sectors and industries across the UK with an opportunity to learn from each other and build collaborations on intersectional issues.

No, you don’t have to be attached to an organisation to be eligible. In your application, please demonstrate how you are currently supporting migrant and refugee communities and your experience in and commitment to the sector.

Yes. In fact, a greater positive impact on an organisation has been noted when more than one individual has embarked on our leadership development programmes. Please submit your application and our panel will ensure a fair and balanced moderation process.

Yes, most definitely. This programme is also for volunteers in the sector - you are leaders too! There are many social leaders who carry out their social purpose work through volunteering. All we ask that you please ensure you demonstrate your experience in and commitment to the sector.

Yes, this programme is open to all volunteers in the sector - you are leaders too! However, we appreciate that there can be work/volunteer restrictions that some people in the asylum/immigration system(s) face. Please ensure that you protect yourselves and know your rights.

While you do not need permission or buy-in from your organisation, we have found that the support of an organisation can positively impact on the development of the individual, especially in terms of implementing learning.

As this is an online programme, the only materials you need is access to an internet connection and a device to work from (laptop, computer, tablet). All other materials will be provided for free online.
