Environmental Justice and Social Justice

Emerging Leader 2021

4: WHY Wheel

Curated as part of a Clore Social Leadership ‘Challenge Project’ and in association with their leadership development programme, six driven sector leaders explored 'Environmental Justice and Social Justice'.

The WHY Wheel

We have produced two prototypes: ‘Environmental x Social Justice Wheels’.

The WHY Wheel

/

This wheel brings together a body of inarguable evidence, with references, to show the connection between social justice issues and the environmental and climate crisis. There are six issues featured here. It is not an exhaustive list, but the overall effect is clear: the climate crisis is a social justice issue.

Examples include:

  • Women are at greater risk of gender-based violence owing to the effects of the climate crisis.
  • Race has a greater influence on exposure to pollutants than poverty.
  • People with disabilities are more vulnerable and more susceptible to the effects of the climate crisis, and
  • Less likely to have adequate access to information, resources and services to adapt.

This model provides a snapshot of just some of the intersections identified by the group during our research, we recognise that there will be many more, that beneficiaries may intersect across multiple issues and also that these will change over time.

We have a vision for both wheels to be interactive, dynamic and co-owned. We invite you to add to the wheels. Add your evidence and build the picture of how our missions connect to the environmental crisis.
