Environmental Justice and Social Justice

Emerging Leader 2021

6: Next Steps

Curated as part of a Clore Social Leadership ‘Challenge Project’ and in association with their leadership development programme, six driven sector leaders explored 'Environmental Justice and Social Justice'.

Next Steps

We have a vision for both wheels to be interactive, dynamic and co-owned. We invite you to add to the wheels. Add your evidence and build the picture of how our missions connect to the environmental crisis. Add the resources or tips that have helped your organisation take action.

Share your thoughts, your action & your ideas here.

We call on you, our peers in the social sector to take action. Start with simple actions and start seriously looking at the bigger, strategic actions and seismic shifts you will take.

Together, our sector must respond. Together we will respond.

How can you do this?

1. Identify the intersections between your organisational mission and the environmental & climate crisis
Use the Environmental x Social Justice Wheels to help identify the intersection between your mission and environmental justice.
Further notes and references can be found here.
The WHY Wheel and supporting document provides a snapshot of just some of the intersections identified by the group, there will be many more and we hope this will be added to over time.

2. Identify your allies and stakeholders
Share and discuss with staff across your organisation, including senior management and trustees.
Engage your stakeholders and beneficiaries in discussions, how do they see Environmental Justice impacting on them and what changes would they like to see in your organisation and ways of working that will enable this to happen.

3. Identify all the actions you can potentially take to address any of the issues that arise
Our ‘WHAT & WHY’ wheel can provide some ideas.

Easily implemented actions        Medium term actions        Strategic or longer term

4. Prioritise
There will be many actions you can take at a range of levels.
Consider the importance of the issues to your stakeholders and the level of impact each action may have on your organisation. This will help highlight the potential change and actions you can take.
The materiality index shared by The Children’s Trust and Clarasys at a recent event is a useful tool for helping with prioritisation.

5. Make a start, wherever you feel happiest and most able
Small and simple actions are far better than inaction, use the ‘WHAT & HOW’ Wheel as inspiration for your stepping up point. Links and further information here.
Then begin to look seriously at the bigger, strategic actions and shifts you can take.
Update and inform your stakeholders, beneficiaries and fellow staff of your progress and the actions taken.
