We are opening applications for 20 places at our Alumni Residential on 20-21 November 2025 at Ashorne Hill, Leamington Spa. This is an opportunity to help shape and refine our next organisational strategy – whilst refreshing and strengthening your own practice and wellbeing.

This comes at a time of profound change for society and the social sector.
“There isn't a single 'right' way to lead”

Leadership development programmes offer a unique opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

Through a blend of 1-1 coaching, the Lumina Spark personality profile, in-person residentials and more, our Emerging Leader programme is crafted to help elevate those with 3-6 years of leadership experience to expand their skills and network so they can flourish in their roles.

Read about Pinelopi Theodorakakou’s experience over the past couple of months where she has experienced a profound transformation, gaining new insights into leadership, developing actionable strategies, and building meaningful connections during her time on the Emerging Leader programme.

What insights have you gained about yourself, leadership and the sector

Over the past three months, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of what leadership means to me and how I want to embody it moving forward. I've begun to recognise my leadership strengths as well as the areas where I need to grow. One of the most valuable insights I’ve gained is that there isn't a single 'right' way to lead. I've learned that I can embrace my soft and quiet leadership style while still effectively achieving my core commitment: leading by empowering others. What I appreciate most about this course is its holistic approach, combining theory, methodology, and reflection. This blend has allowed me to craft a leadership plan tailored to my unique style, with the support of my team.

How have you used what you have learned?

I'm not one to easily reflect on my leadership journey—my team could probably tell you more! But in all seriousness, I've realised that I thrive when I can translate big ideas into practical steps. Creating my leadership plan has become a daily guide, reminding me of the leader I aspire to be and the one I am becoming. In practical terms, I've distilled my plan into three core practices that I try to integrate into my work every day. I think of this as my leadership toolbox. These practices help me experiment with new approaches, refine my habits, and continually reflect on my progress as an emerging leader. This routine has been instrumental in shaping my leadership style and ensuring that I’m growing in a direction aligned with my values and goals.

What elements of the programme did you gain the most from?

My highlight so far has definitely been the time spent reflecting on big ideas, values, and leadership theories with my classmates. It's been incredibly empowering to discover that others share my perspective on leadership and have supported me—even as complete strangers—when I’ve expressed self-doubt. The honesty and openness that everyone brings to the program have truly stood out as its greatest strength. The residential experience was another high point, where everything came together—time to connect, reflect, and build relationships with each other. I have a feeling the coaching sessions will also become a favorite, but I’ll have to let you know for sure at the end of the programme!

Which elements surprised you the most?

For me, the standout experience has been the Lumina Spark journey. It revealed aspects of myself that I had always felt but struggled to articulate. What I appreciate most about this tool is its openness and flexibility, allowing me to use it in a way that best aligns with my current leadership path and where I am right now.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the programme?

If you’re passionate about the impact your work has on your sector, as well as the people around you, this program is for you. It offers an incredible blend of theory, methodology, and practical tools. But be prepared to put in the work—that's where the magic happens. As someone once said, 'You get out what you put in,' so approach it with open eyes and an open heart!

If Pinelopi’s story inspired you to embrace your leadership journey in 2025 then why not join the next cohort of our Emerging Leader programme! With an early bird deadline saving you £650, now is the time to secure your place!

How can you use AI to your advantage?

How Can We Navigate the Complexity of AI and Ethics in Today’s World? Can an Intergenerational Workforce Unlock New Opportunities for Innovation? How Crucial Is Collaboration in Shaping the Future of Work?

Last week we were joined by Annabel Gillard, speaker, writer and researcher, who led a thought-provoking discussion on AI, Ethics and Organisational Culture, diving into the above questions and more.

If you have time in your diary to watch or listen to the full webinar, we highly recommend it! To get warmed up, find some of the high level takeaways below:

1. Ethical concerns and human oversight in AI

AI applications like facial recognition for security, social housing access or welfare fraud detection can lead to immediate, significant human harm if not properly managed.

2. Organisational impact of AI adoption

Dependence on AI may lead to skill loss within teams and could lead to challenges in managing training and talent development.

3. Environmental and social impacts of AI

AI has high energy demands for training algorithms, data processing, and infrastructure maintenance, alongside resource-intensive hardware production.

4. Generational differences in AI adoption

Younger workers (Millennials and Gen Z) are digital natives. They are typically more open to rapid technological change and have more of a disruptive mindset whereas older generations may view AI adoption with scepticism.

5. Collaboration as the future

Working together to address complex issues is more effective than duplicating efforts in competitive silos - how this is done specifically in the social sector is still evolving.

6. Changing mindsets: From knowledge to curiosity

With the availability of infinite information, success now depends on adaptability, skills, and fostering a curiosity-driven mindset rather than just knowledge retention.

Essential training launched: Coaching Skills For Leaders!

We are pleased to announce the launch of a four-week online course designed to develop fundamental coaching skills necessary for effective and authentic leadership.

Coaching skills are an integral part of people management. But we know these skills aren't always easy to deliver in practice, that’s why we’ve curated a four week course facilitated by an experienced Executive Coach. As well as self led learning the course will feature three live classrooms in which you’ll be able to try out your new coaching skills with your cohort and receive coaching guidance.

Requiring an approximate time commitment of three to four hours per week and consisting of live online classrooms and self-directed learning, the course is comprised of the following elements:

Coaching Context
Investigate the difference between coaching, managing and leadership and start to map out your own coaching context and create a Coaching Manifesto - a document listing the coaching skills you want to develop.

Diving In
This week you’ll learn about the key questions you should be asking and what a 'good' coaching conversation looks like. You’ll also learn about the OSCAR coaching methodology and practice applying it to a real life work challenge with your peers in your live classroom.

Your Achilles’ Heel
Explore effective listening skills such as Open Questioning and examine common negative listening habits and how to avoid them.

Take Action
This week we’ll look at creating a culture of coaching in your workplace, and discuss what the barriers to this might be. You’ll also take your learning from the past three weeks and finalise your Coaching Manifesto.

Angharad Irvine, Clore Social Leadership Director of Leadership Programmes commented:

"There are so many benefits to adopting effective coaching skills as a leader: it helps with solution finding, improves listening and communication skills, enhances team performance and develops a positive and empowering culture. We are really excited about how this course will equip current and emerging leaders with the skill set to thrive in our dynamic social sector."

You can learn more and apply today by visiting our website.

Applications are open until 4 November 2024.
.

This coupled with years of underfunding and austerity has resulted in leaders in the charity sector working tirelessly to assist the recovery of their communities. This programme is for leaders in small local organisations with a turnover of up to £500,000 annually. They will have the chance to develop their leadership skills, empowering them to help their community thrive.

Taking place between October 2024 and June 2025, Social Leaders North East aims to bring together 20 participants to build capacity, strengthen communities, and learn from one another. As part of this, we are strongly committed to supporting leaders from the Global Majority, and we actively encourage applications from people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Caroline Broadhurst, Deputy CEO of The Rank Foundation said:

"The Social Leaders North East programme will be hugely important in helping the region's existing and emerging social leaders build the skills and confidence they need to help our local communities. This, combined with the support networks they will develop through the programme, will provide a much-needed boost for them and the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise sector to respond to ever-changing need. The Rank Foundation is delighted to be a part of this wonderful initiative."

Nadia Alomar, CEO of Clore Social commented:

“We are thrilled to launch the Social Leaders North East programme, supporting emerging leaders to drive impactful change in their communities.
